For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Irbesartan is an anti-hypertension medication used to treat high blood pressure and to slow or prevent damage from diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetics.
More commonly patients buy irbesartan by its more widely-recognized names of Avapro, Aproval, or Karvea. It's also possible to buy irbesartan in combination with other medications, as is the case with Avalide, which contains irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic.
Irbesartan can be used by patients age 18 and up. Effects on younger patients are unclear.
Managing Hypertension
The majority of patients buy irbesartan to treat high blood pressure, either on its own or with other medications. Irbesartan is taken just once per day, with or without food as desired:
It takes a few weeks of treatment for full benefit to be seen. Treatment can continue indefinitely. If lifestyle changes---such as exercising and quitting smoking---are not made or prove insufficient to manage blood pressure naturally, patients will need to take irbesartan or similar medications for the remainder of life.
Keep in mind that hypertension, though a common illness, is quite serious. Untreated it can lead to heart failure, kidney failure, heart attack, or stroke. Hypertension is also notorious for being symptom-free until a major medical event occurs---be sure to take blood pressure medication as directed even if feeling fine.
Managing Diabetic Nephropathy
The other reason patients buy irbesartan is to slow or prevent the progression of diabetic nephropathy, which describes the kidney damage caused by diabetes. It is only effective in type 2 diabetes---it will provide little benefit in type 1---and it's only suitable when diabetes is accompanied by high blood pressure, as the medication will lower blood pressure regardless of what it's being taken for.
Kidney function is usually tested when the type 2 diabetes diagnosis is first made, and periodically after. Untreated it can ultimately lead to kidney failure. Hispanics, blacks, and Native Americans are more likely than whites or Asians to experience serious kidney damage from type 2 diabetes. The former groups may require closer monitoring than the latter.
Treatment typically consists of:
With respect to kidney function, results from irbesartan may take longer to see, since intent is often to stop or prevent progression. Variation between individuals taking higher doses of irbesartan is also significant. It may be that irbesartan works fine, or doctors may decide to try other medications after a few months of treatment if the condition progresses.
Adverse Reactions
Irbesartan is designed to lower blood pressure, so patients may experience side effects related to a drop in blood pressure. This can cause patients to feel lightheaded and dizzy, particularly when rising from a sitting or laying position. It can also happen if dehydrated. These symptoms should pass after a few weeks as the body adjusts to its new, lower blood pressure.
The prescribing doctor should be made aware if there is a history of kidney or liver damage, or heart disease.
Irbesartan can interact with other medications. Of most concern are:
Irbesartan should not be taken while pregnant. Speak with a doctor before use if breastfeeding.
